Vitamin C

Ascorbic Acid, or vitamin c is a water-soluble vitamin. Humans are unable to synthesize it endogenously so it is an important dietary supplement.

Mechanism of Action:

  • Ascorbic Acid functions as a cofactor, enzyme complement, co-substrate and anti-oxidant in various reactions and metabolic processes in the body. It has been shown to reduce monocyte adherence to the endothelium, improve endothelium-dependent nitric oxide production and vasodilation, and reduce vascular smooth-muscle-cell apoptosis, which prevents plaque instability in atherosclerosis supporting our cardiovascular health. It has shown to facilitate iron absorption by forming a chelate with ferric iron helping support the uptake. Vitamin C has also shown to prevent the auto inactivation of lysyl and prolyl hydroxylase, which are the two key enzymes in collagen biosynthesis, which is important for our connective tissue health, including wound healing and muscle health and recovery.
  • ** Numerous studies show conflicting evidence when it comes to vitamin c. It is important to consider research is limited in providing convincing evidence because the subjects plasma and tissue concentrations are typically close to saturations at study entry because of the daily intake by mouth.

Indications and Benefits:

  • Vitamin C is an essential nutrient known for aiding in immune system support, cardiovascular health, collagen production, and antioxidant protection.
  • It is required for the biosynthesis of collagen in connective tissue, some neurotransmitters, and protein metabolism.
  • It plays a role in the repair of connective tissue in our bodies aiding in muscle health and recovery, as well as wound healing.
  • Studies report it plays an important role in supporting the absorption of iron as well.

Dosage:

  • Ascorbic acid or vitamin c dosages for IV therapy are under our physician protocol recommended daily doses and customized based on individual health needs and goals. High doses of vitamin c (over 5 gm+) require a specific lab to ensure safe administration.

Considerations:

  • Consult a healthcare provider before significantly increasing your intake, especially if you have certain health conditions or are taking medications. Despite numerous studies with conflicting evidence it is important to consider research is limited by PO intake and the saturation levels at study entry.
  • Safety and efficacy during cancer treatment is controversial. Some data indicates it might help protect the tumor cells from the action of the radiation therapy and/or chemotherapeutic agents.

Potential Side Effects:

  • Excessive intake can cause gastrointestinal disturbances or an increased risk of kidney stones for those with pre-existing renal issues, due to the potential increase in urinary oxalate and uric acid excretion.
  • Potential increase in LDLs when combined with statin therapy.
